Cooper's Rock Keychain

Observation #1

According to the Cooper Heritage Center director's welcome letter, the keychain is equipped with a blacklight.

Letter from Museum Curator

Observation #1

The curator, June Novak, states she spoke with Grace, who had a "vision" that we could help.

  • This is the Grace from The Woods (Season 1 of Empty Faces).

Observation #2

She points out different occurrences that only she has experienced. None of her coworkers have been affected.

Observation #3

She also reveals that she is the one who signed us up for the program.

Letter from Museum Director

Observation #1

This is a welcome letter from the Cooper Heritage Center director, Cecilia Dandridge. She explains we are new volunteers for an apprenticeship program.

Observation #2

She gives us the website to access our first assignment.

Observation #3

The assignments can also be reached by navigating to the "Volunteers" section from the menu.

Meeting Minutes

Observation #1

These minutes are for the meeting that held the deciding vote to commence the strike.

Observation #2

There are coded messages within these pages.

Observation #3

The key is "Correctronic 340". Googling this is a little tricky. It comes up as Brother typewriter ribbon, but what we actually want is the typewriter model itself.

Observation #4

Looking at an image of the keyboard of the typewriter, you will notice all of the symbols on the number keys are similar to those on our current computers, with the exception of the 6. This has the cent symbol on it.

Observation #5

The number that corresponds to the preceding symbol of a message is the number of times each letter gets shifted back.

Observation #6

The decoded messages read:

  • "Delivered by D.G."
  • "Distribute re: strike action."
    • *I do not see this one myself, but HaK has it in the recaps section.
  • "Work in Hades must continue despite strike. Seek outside labor."
  • "Ensure confidentiality".
  • "Schedule J.Y. exit interview."

Museum Brochure

Observation #1

This pamphlet basically regurgitates and informs what is offered on the website.

Museum Tote Bag

Observation #1

This is a nifty bag in which to keep all case documents and materials for convenient carrying.

Profile of Miner

Observation #1

The note from David to E. at the bottom of the profile has some words coded by symbols.

Observation #2

We do not yet have the means to decipher this new alphabet.

Regional Folklore Booklet

Observation #1

There is a compilation of ghost stories, with heavy tie-ins to The Woods (Empty Faces Season 1).

PICKAXE

Observation #1

This archive consists of an interview audio clip of Silas Kemp.

Observation #2

Silas clues into security protocols and zone names. He reveals the zone names and partial number string, plus a word.

Observation #3

A shift cipher is used to reveal the full password. The zone name is the base. The number string is the shift key (forward).

Observation #4

Cairo

  • Zone: C - A - I - R - O
  • Authorization Code: 9 - 4 - 11 - 16 - 16
  • Password: L - E - T - H - E

Observation #5

At three points of the interview, the voice of what I will refer to from here on out as The Divine (the running-theme evil entity in Empty Faces) can be heard but is indecipherable once again.

Bracelet

Observation #1

The stone token is magnetically attracted to this bracelet.

Observation #2

There are 2 charms on this bracelet, a lantern and a bird in a cage.

  • Canaries in cages were often used by miners to warn of toxic gas leaks. As long as the bird was awake and alive, the miners were safe. If it passed out or died, they had better high-tail it out of there.

Exhibit Research

Observation #1

On the petition, David Griffith's entry stands out bold and strong among the others.

Journal Entries

Observation #1

Starting with the entry of 3, August 1873 on page 12, we get coded messages.

Observation #2

The first set is a simple substitution cipher. Replace the alphabet with a backward alphabet. I.e., A becomes Z, B becomes Y, etc.

  • "THE FIGURE HAD VANISHED."
  • "SEAMS OF LUSTROUS ROCK SHOT UP AND ACROSS THE VAST ROOF LIKE THE VAULTING OF A CATHEDRAL CEILING. THEIR GLOW REFLECTED OFF THE POOL'S SURFACE AND THE SILENT HUM OF THEIR POWER FILLED THE AIR."

Observation #27  6 June 1906

  • "THE ONLY WAY OUT IS DOWN."

Letter from Museum Curator

Observation #1

In this letter, the curator speaks of an apparition in her museum apparently trying to steal an item. She took a photo of him, which she included in our package. She has also included the item.

Observation #2

She believes the ghost to be that of David Griffith.

  • She says an older version. But his body was never found, and he was only presumed dead. There is no proof he died and wouldn't have aged to look like he does in the photo.

Letter from Museum Director

Observation #1

This letter introduces the included journal.

  • We are directed on how to access our next assignment on the Cooper Heritage Center website.

Miner's Postcard

Observation #1

This was the only item left on the curator's desk after "something" swept everything else to the floor.

Observation #2

There is an underlying coded message in this postcard.

  • One must shine the black light from Episode 1 on the symbols in order to see them better.

Observation #3

Seeing as we have not cracked the secret alphabet yet, we must add this to our list of things to follow up on later in the season.

Mining Company Memo

Observation #1

There is a cipher at the top of the first page and the bottom of the last page.

Observation #2

Seeing as we are dealing with letters, and we had to use a typewriter model in Episode 1, we will be doing the same in this episode.

  • Googling 1959 Galaxie typewriter produces the model Smith Corona Galaxie.

Observation #3

To decode the messages, pay particular attention to the punctuation preceding the phrases.

  • Looking at the typewriter keyboard, note that " = 2, ' = 8, and - = 6.
  • These are the number of shifts for the letters following those symbols.
  • You will shift backward in the alphabet.

Observation #4

Once decoded, the messages read:

  • "DO NOT DISTRIBUTE BEYOND THIS OFFICE"
  • "NO STOPPAGE. LVL NEGOTIATIONS WILL CONTINUE."

Newspaper Clipping

Observation #1

Are the authors of the articles related?

  • Both have the surname Sutherland.

Observation #2

Is Pennywise haunting this town? lol

  • A man states he saw something that could not be. His neighbor did not see the monster, only Fuller.
  • Is the evil taking on the form of people's fears?
  • Could the evil have made the curator's neighbor see something that wasn't there, making him walk out in front of her car?

Observation #3

"A slow, dark flood pools at our waist."

  • The evil has come and is growing. This town is fucked.

Stone Token

Observation #1

The curator sent this to us for safekeeping. The apparition she had been seeing inside her museum has been attempting to steal it.

Observation #2

It is magnetically attracted to the accompanying bracelet.

Message from David

Observation #1

This was produced by June's printer all on its own.

Observation #2

June believed it to be a message from David, but couldn't find anything significant.

Observation #3

Shining the blacklight received in Episode 1 on the back of the bottom half reveals messages in the otherworld language.

Observation #4

Once deciphered, the messages read:

  • "I'M GETTING BETTER AT THIS. MY SHADOW AND THE SOUND OF MY FOOTSTEPS CAN CRAWL OVER TO YOUR SIDE. SOMETIMES MY WORDS. IT'S HARDER TO SHIFT MY BODY."
  • "I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE CROSSING OVER. THE DARKNESS IS RACING AGAINST ME, AND IT'S WINNING. I'M SO TIRED. BUT I WON'T GIVE UP, BECAUSE SHE'S WAITING FOR ME. FIND ELIN. SHE CAN HELP BOTH OF US."

Night Dust

Observation #1

This is to be used in conjunction with Elin's spell.

Otherworld Language Lesson

Observation #1

By studying and completing this lesson, we can learn the secret code used by David Griffith and Elin.

Observation #2

  • 4: Y-OOH M-UUH-S-T UH-V-OY-D OW-UH-R AH-D D-IH-L-AIT-T-S AH-N-D S-T-R-AY-N-J T-R-EH-ZH-UH-R-Z

    • Apparently, part of the message in #5 was cut off in my copy, since according to the recaps, there is more to the message...
      • ... H-AY-T, F-OW-L TH-UH M-AI-N-D, AH-N-D K-IH-L AW-L IH-N-UH-R G-EUH-D (... HATE, FOUL THE MIND, AND KILL INNER GOOD)

Observation #3

Using what we learn here, we can go back to items from previous episodes to decode messages.

Observation #4

In the profile of David Griffith from Episode 1, the words can be decoded as:

  • "BRIGHTSTONE"
  • "ALWAYS"

Observation #5

On the miner's postcard from Episode 2, the message can be decoded as:

  • "I'VE BEEN WATCHING YOU A LONG TIME. I NEED THE TOKEN. THE EXPLOSION DOESN'T HOLD A CANDLE TO THE DISASTER HEADING YOUR WAY. GET IT TO ME NOW."

Otherworld Spell

Observation #1

This is the seemingly useless scrap of paper.

Observation #2

Yay, we get to take the same "darkness" test that David was made to take.

  • Hmm, how much darkness has invaded our souls?

Observation #3

Um, I thought we WEREN'T supposed to reunite all the pieces...

  • June never did say if SHE passed the darkness test...

Observation #4

People in town have been having "seizures" and passing out.

  • Damn right, the darkness is to blame.
  • These people are being hollowed out!
